The Lodge School Alumni Association (LSAA), along with the New Century Lions Club of Kuching Emerald dropped by the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) Animal Shelter over the weekend to make a small contribution towards the Society.

The SSPCA, which is a non-profit humane organization located at 6 ½ Miles, Penrissen Road, is run by a committee of dedicated Volunteers and small team of working staff.
The Society works to prevent the mistreatment of animals, to take care of sick animals, and to teach people to take care of their pets. The Animal Shelter was opened in November 1998. Homeless animals are housed at the shelter pending their adoption by new owners.
The Shelter currently houses around 450 cats and dogs. With a constant influx of ‘residents’ the Society runs with a heavy overhead and constantly requires financial support from the public- depending on membership fees and the goodwill of local people.
Donations/funds received are used for two basic areas:
Operating Expenses: These are the continual daily expenses of feeding the animals (approximately RM300.00 per day), paying the working staff who feed the animals and clean the shelter daily, and provide medical care to the animals.
Capital Expenses: These are for fixed assets such as buildings, vehicles, an information database etc.
On the Saturday morning which we visited the Shelter welcomed several unexpected new arrivals: a rain-sodden cardboard box containing a mother cat and her new-born kittens that was tossed over the Shelter’s fence; and a litter of homeless puppies that were dropped off by a family of good Samaritans.

Without the help of the public, the future for many of these beautiful animals is bleak so on behalf of the SSPCA, the LSAA is appealing to all of our contacts, friends and family in the hope that those people considering adopting a cat or dog will come to the Sarawak SPCA to choose their new lifelong companion.
We would like to extend a big thank you to all those that contributed in cash and kind to this weekend’s appeal! On a happy note, at the end of the visit at least one lucky pup found itself a new loving owner.
The Shelter is open to the public from 10:00am to 4:30pm, Monday to Saturday and from 10:30am to 3:30pm on Sundays and is located at Lot 1787 Blk No. 233, 6 1/2 Miles Penrissen Road, Kuching.Tel: 082-618 200 Fax: 082-616 500.
