Lodge School Alumni Association EduFair 2009

PRESS RELEASE : Lodge School's EduFair 2009 (Friday 19th June 2009)

The Lodge Group of Schools in collaboration with the Lodge School Alumni Association (LSAA) hosted their second EduFair last week. The day-long event held at the Lodge National School Library, saw several Tertiary Institutions and Education Counseling companies showcasing their various services and courses offered.

Organised by the LSAA, the EduFair's main objective was to raise awareness amongst the school’s current Fourth and Fifth Formers on the diverse career options available to them. Apart from the Exhibition in the school library, the LSAA also arranged for several Alumni to speak to the students during a 'Talk and Q&A session', about their current professions and personal experiences studying overseas and course choices.

"Our aim was to make students aware of the spectrum of career options in the 'real world' before making their decisions. Growing up, we're often led to believe the only choices for further education would be to pursue Medicine, Law or Accounting", explains Goh Ai Fen, the association’s Events and Education Officer.

"But apart from the more traditional career paths, we also want to highlight the often overlooked 'creative' courses like Communications, Media, Performing Arts and Landscape Architecture. Little is known of these industries and parents are often reluctant to encourage their children to explore these options".

This year's Talk and Q&A session included speeches by fellow ex-Lodgians on the professions of Law, Hospitality and Landscape Architecture. Last year’s line-up included Alumni in the lines of Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Advertising, Law and Performing Arts (Music).

The idea of the EduFair was proposed to the school in 2008 by the Lodge School Alumni Association. "We wanted a way to 'give back' to the school and to its' students. I think we all would have appreciated an opportunity like this while in high school! Most importantly the insights shared by our Alumni are honest and un-biased. We’re not here to ‘sell’ the students anything, we just want to let them know what to expect, the pros and cons of the various industries".

Following last year's positive response the EduFair, participants of this years’ exhibition included Swinburne College, INTI as well as education counseling companies IDP Pty Ltd, Global Educational Services, Global Education Network, Marketing Management Services, Raven Trading S/B, AMACO, Australian Business Centre and Raffles Education Network, representing their various tertiary institutions.

The Lodge School Alumni Association was recently registered January this year.

"With this Alumni Association, we hope to create an 'official' portal for all ex-Lodgians. A place for Lodgians to keep in touch, network and maybe, even contribute back to Lodge. With close to 55 years of history, that’s a lot of Lodgians!", stated Pro-tem President Derbe Tang.

In addition to the annual EduFair the LSAA also has other projects such as their 'Lodgians for Lodgians' network. "Basically, this works as a Privilege Card for our Alumni. By registering on our Lodgian website and paying a small fee or RM10.00 our Alumni receive a membership card that allows them special discounts with participating 'Lodgian-owned' businesses", explains Recruitment Officer Reuben Yap. "It’s a way for our Alumni to support each other and their business endeavors."
